DESCRIPTION: LeMaire fils, Paris, 18th century Butterfield-type brass sundial with compass, octagonal plate measures 80mm x 68mm and has hour scales for latitudes 43°, 46°, 49° and 52°, folding gnomon with bird shaped supports is graduated for latitude adjustment between 40° and 60°, glazed engraved compass with blued steel hand, underside of plate is engraved with 24 cities and their respective latitudes, comes with its original leather wrapped wooden box with padded interior. An excellent example for anyone desiring a 1700s vintage sundial to round out their horological collection.
CONDITION: Excellent cosmetic condition overall, some mild fine to micro-fine scratches, underside with some toning primarily at perimeter areas, compass with approximately correct function; box shows little exterior wear, ample wear to inner fabric, button latch good though leaving some gap between top and bottom when closed, one securing hook is missing.
